Dear District 2 residents,
San Diego continues to be one of our country's safest large cities. We have seen a decrease in violent crimes in the first six months of 2024 compared to last year. A national survey conducted by the Major Cities Chiefs Association found that San Diego experienced a decrease in all categories of violent crimes - homicides, rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults. Most notably, San Diego reported a 47% reduction in homicides in the study, compared to the average 17% reduction in homicides across the entire study.
The San Diego Police Department has worked tirelessly to reduce crime through a variety of means. One of the most successful approaches has been the installation of Smart Streetlights across various locations in the city. Although the 500 total Smart Streetlights are not yet fully installed, they are already helping our police officers to solve crimes. Since January, the Smart Streetlights have helped officers investigate over 160 incidents, recover more than 100 stolen vehicles, and locate and arrest over 100 suspects.
As a member of the Public Safety Committee, I have been supportive of the Smart Streetlights program as a method to reduce crime and assist police in their efforts to catch perpetrators. Even in the first phases of its implementation, we can see the tangible results this technology is having on our ability to combat crimes in our communities. I am grateful to our police officers and staff for their diligent work to protect our residents and keep our city safe.

- Last week, City staff put up large signs reminding the public that it is unlawful for anyone to swim, wade, surf, or skin dive within 75 feet of the Ocean Beach Pier. For the safety of the public, we ask everyone to please follow this rule as the Pier has experienced significant, visible damage with one of the piles falling off.

US Navy Christens USNS Point Loma
- Last weekend, the US Navy christened its newest ship, the USNS Point Loma, in honor of the decades-long relationship between District 2's Point Loma community and the US Navy. San Diego has one of the country's largest naval personnel concentrations, and is home to nearly a quarter of all Navy vessels. We welcome the USNS Point Loma to be a part of the Navy's important medical fleet.
