CAMPBELL CHRONICLES

September 20, 2024

Dear District 2 residents,

September 15 marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the rich history and culture of our country's Hispanic and Latino citizens. San Diego shares more than just a border with Mexico; we share a rich binational economy, cuisine, culture, and history. Because of this unique relationship, Hispanic Heritage Month in San Diego is a meaningful celebration of a large part of our city's history.

Hispanic Heritage Month was first celebrated in the United States in 1968 as a way to celebrate the independence of many Central American countries. The first day of Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15, is the independence day of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, with Mexico's independence day on September 16, Chile's on September 18, and Belize's on September 21.

According to 2020 Census data compiled by SANDAG, Hispanic and Latino residents make up 16.7% of the population of District 2, and have contributed significantly to making District 2 what it is today. Old Town San Diego, located in District 2, is known as the Birthplace of California and is a hub of Mexican culture in our city.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, I encourage you to visit Old Town, and to learn more about the history of our city and the role that Hispanic and Latino communities have played in forming the city we now know and love.

Best,

Councilmember Jennifer Campbell
District 2
San Diego City Council

Grandparents' Day

On September 10, Council President Pro Tem LaCava and I proclaimed September 8 to be "Grandparents' Day" in the City of San Diego. Becoming a grandparent has brought me so much joy, and I am proud to recognize and thank all the grandparents in our city for their contributions to raising San Diego's next generations.
