CAMPBELL CHRONICLES

October 4, 2024

Dear District 2 residents,

In October, we celebrate LGBTQ History Month, a time to look back on the history of the LGBTQ community and the trailblazers who brought us to where we are today. The LGBTQ community has a long and rich history that leads us to this present moment, and it is important to celebrate the strength and resilience of the people who carried our community on their backs for so many years.

Christine Kehoe, who served on the City Council from 1993 to 2000, was San Diego's first openly LGBTQ Councilmember. When she was elected to the City Council, she broke a major barrier for LGBTQ San Diegans, and she went on to serve in the State Assembly and State Senate, representing the citizens of San Diego with a fierce passion.

San Diego is a beacon of what an accepting city can look like, thanks largely to people like Christine Kehoe. We are led by our city's first openly gay Mayor, three gay City Councilmembers, and have LGBTQ identified leaders from our County Board of Supervisors to our State Senate and Assembly.

As a proud member of the Stonewall Generation of LGBTQ  Americans, I have witnessed just how far our country has come toward equal rights. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the exceptional LGBTQ leaders our City has had, both past and present, for their role in shaping the history of our city and the history of San Diego's LGBTQ community.

Best,

Councilmember Jennifer Campbell
District 2
San Diego City Council

District 2 is home to many wonderful businesses, both large and small, which help to bolster the local economy and provide jobs and opportunities to the residents in the area. Each newsletter, I will highlight some of our businesses as a way to acknowledge the local business community and their positive impact on our District and on our City.

Nordstrom Rack at Clairemont Town Square: On September 19, my Community Representatives stopped by the new Nordstrom Rack in Clairemont to celebrate their grand opening and welcome them to our community. This new business will create jobs and support the local economy in Clairemont. Welcome to D2, Nordstrom Rack!

Selva Coffee House in Midway: Selva Coffee House opened to the public in March of 2024 inside the Midway location of Terra Bella Nursery. They offer a selection of coffee and tea drinks, as well as pastries, that customers can enjoy while they browse for a new houseplant or sit and study among the greenery.

Midway Rising Quarterly Update

On September 23, the City Council heard a quarterly update on the Midway Rising development and its progress. Notable updates included the extension of the exclusive negotiating agreement, continued exploration of an Enhanced Infrastructure Financing District, commencement of the interim lease of the property, the August 7 public outreach meeting in Rancho Bernardo, ongoing discussions of the terms of the partnership between Midway Rising and the City, and the continuation of the CEQA process.

Short-Term Action Plan on Homelessness

On October 1, the City Council heard a presentation on the City's proposed short-term action plan on homelessness, which aims to replace the existing shelter beds that will be closing in the next several months, as well as expand programs such as Safe Sleeping and Safe Parking to provide diverse options for the homeless population. The plan passed with unanimous support for taking action to account for the shelter space that must close, so that none of the people currently in these shelters will be forced to return to living on the streets.

SDPD Northern Division Appreciation Day

On September 24, Councilmember LaCava and I proclaimed September 25, 2024 to be "SDPD Northern Division Appreciation Day" in the City of San Diego. SDPD's Northern Division serves the District 2 communities of Mission Beach, Mission Bay, Bay Ho, Bay Park, and Clairemont. Thank you to the dedicated officers from Northern Division for keeping District 2 and the City of San Diego safe!

40th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day

On September 21, my Point Loma Community Representative and members of my team participated in the 40th annual I Love A Clean San Diego Coastal Cleanup Day at NTC Park in Liberty Station. With over 100 sites across San Diego County, Coastal Cleanup Day is part of a larger statewide effort by the California Coastal Commission and Clean CA to collect trash and debris from our coastal areas that could otherwise end up polluting our beaches and waterways. Thank you to ILACSD for another year of organizing such a successful event!

Ocean Beach Pier Update

On September 30, my Ocean Beach Community Representative and the Ocean Beach community leaders on the Ocean Beach Pier Renewal Project Task Force signed the project's white paper, selecting the preferred design concept for the new Ocean Beach Pier. Recently, City crews drilled holes through the pier and into the ocean floor to obtain data on the ocean depth and to gather soil samples to be tested, which will help engineers in designing the foundations for the replacement pier.

Ocean Beach Trash Cleanup Event

On September 24, staff from the Environmental Services Department completed a trash pickup event for residents of Ocean Beach. They collected 0.9 tons of recyclable waste and 1.21 tons of non-recyclable waste for a total of 2.11 tons. Thank you to our Environmental Services team for their hard work to serve the residents of District 2!

Residents are invited to a public meeting regarding the City's plans for the Mission Bay Park Improvements Program Environmental Impact Report (PEIR). Plans discussed by the report include projects to improve water quality, habitat, wetlands, and bike/pedestrian pathways. The meeting will take place at Mission Bay High School on Wednesday, October 16 at 6pm.

This grant funding has gone toward a variety of projects and priorities, from economic development to homeless services to infrastructure repair. In District 2, we've received grants for projects like the Ocean Beach Library, Pure Water San Diego, the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Performing Arts Center in Liberty Station, the West Mission Bay Drive Bridge, and many more.
