CAMPBELL CHRONICLES

January 10, 2025

Dear District 2 resident,

Happy New Year! I hope your holidays were restful and well spent with loved ones. At the beginning of my seventh year as the City Councilmember representing District 2, I have been reflecting on some of the accomplishments we achieved in the past year. From new parks to new policies, here are some highlights from 2024:

  • Celebrated the reopening of the Cathy Hopper Friendship Center in Clairemont, including the introduction of free or low-cost programming for seniors.
  • Passed the amendments to the Sidewalk Vending Ordinance.
  • Accepted a $37M low-interest loan from the federal government for stormwater infrastructure repairs in South Mission Beach.
  • Passed a policy initiative to require All Gender Family Restrooms in new or remodeled City facilities, along with men and women's restrooms.
  • Improved crosswalks near Loma Portal Elementary, Point Loma High School, and Dana Middle School in Point Loma with flashing beacons and new paint.
  • Approved the City's first ever Child and Youth Master Plan.
  • Completed the repairs to the Bermuda Beach Access Stairs and reopened the stairs to the public.
  • Recognized business and community leader Diane Powers with an honorary street sign in Old Town San Diego.
  • Passed the De Anza Natural Amendment to the Mission Bay Park Master Plan.

This is just a glimpse at the progress we have made together in District 2, and I look forward to Proudly Serving District 2 again in 2025!

Sincerely,

Councilmember Jennifer Campbell
District 2
San Diego City Council

2025 Council Committee and External Assignments

This year, I will continue as the Chair of the Community and Neighborhood Services Committee, and will serve as Vice Chair of the Environment Committee and as a member of the Public Safety Committee and the Economic Development & Intergovernmental Relations Committee. I will also continue as one of the City's appointees to the San Diego River Conservancy Board, and I will serve on the SANDAG Shoreline Preservation Working Group and as an alternate representative to the MTS Board of Directors.

Permanent Barrier Installation for Sunset Cliffs

In response to increasing coastal erosion and public safety concerns, City crews have installed a permanent barrier to a section of the bluffs at Sunset Cliffs, located between Adair Street and Osprey Street. Erosion of the bluffs, made worse by recent king tides events and winter high surf levels, presents a risk to the safety of visitors to Sunset Cliffs, and this permanent barrier will help keep people safe as they enjoy the park.

In-House Mill & Pave Team Completes Work on Channel Way

This year's Fiscal Year 2025 Budget featured, for the first time, an allocation for the Transportation Department to fund an additional in-house Mill & Pave Team to help expedite the completion of street repairs. This team has been hard at work across the city, and recently completed permanent repairs to a section of Channel Way in the Midway District, between Hancock Street and Western Street, which had a Pavement Condition Index (PCI) as low as 14.1. Thank you to the Transportation Department staff who made these repairs possible!

Each awardee will receive $2500 that can be used for tuition, books, fees, room and board, and other educational expenses. The San Diego Foundation is hosting a scholarship overview webinar on January 23 at 3pm. The application period is from January 15, 2025 - March 5, 2025. New Statewide Parking Law In Effect January 1, 2025

Beginning January 1, 2025 a new state law went into effect that prohibits vehicles parking within 20 feet of any marked or unmarked crosswalk to improve the range of vision for approaching drivers and protect pedestrians crossing the street. For the first 60 days this law is in effect, SDPD will issue warning notices to vehicles parked in violation of this new law, and after the warning period, drivers can be ticketed for violating this law even if there is no signage or red curb in the area. Studies have shown that if drivers have greater visibility at crosswalks, crashes involving pedestrians can be more easily avoided, which will help San Diego achieve its Vision Zero goals. For more information on the new law, click the button below.
