FILIPINO AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH
|
Mabuhay (Tagalog translation: long live!) to our Fil-Am community for their outstanding contributions to our region. On Oct. 15th, I joined Mayor Todd Gloria and Councilmembers Kent Lee and Vivian Moreno to proclaim Filipino American History Month in the City of San Diego.
The City of San Diego is home to one of the largest Filipino American populations in the United States. Here in District 4, we have a thriving Filipino community spanning several generations, especially Paradise Hills, North and South Bay Terraces, and Skyline Hills. Join me to honor and celebrate our Fil-Am community.

On Oct. 4th, I had the honor to co-host the Pastor’s Breakfast with Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe at the Encanto Southern Baptist Church. We had a great Q&A session with an incredible group of pastors during breakfast. In 2021, Supervisor Montgomery Steppe established the Pastor’s Breakfast as a way to connect with our local faith-based leaders. It’s a tradition I’m proud to continue with the Supervisor. A special thank you to Pastor Pope and his team for their gracious hospitality.
|
Also, on Oct. 4th, I had the pleasure to attend Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE) “2024 Hope Latina Empowerment Days” workshop event. I sat down with HOPE’s Belinda Barragan and Fernanda Santiago, and Rosa María Hernández. We shared some laughs and learned a lot from each other. Thank you, HOPE, for uplifting women here in San Diego through advocacy and leadership training programs.

On Oct. 11th, my team and I had an exciting night attending the Lincoln High School football team’s homecoming game. Congrats to the Hornets on a big win against the Point Loma Pointers 42 - 0. And a shout-out to the Lincoln High School Class of 1984 as they celebrated their 40th Anniversary Reunion. Go Hornets!

THE 34TH ANNUAL ASIAN BUSINESS ASSOCIATION GALA
|
In the year of the Dragon, on Oct. 18th, the Asian Business Association of San Diego (ABASD) celebrated its 34th Annual Scholarship Awards Gala at the Marriott Marquis. What a night of culture and community. Thank you, ABASD, and to all the changemakers who strive to create a more inclusive economy in San Diego. Congratulations to all the nominees and winners. Keep making history!

On Oct. 20th, I joined the “San Diego Hip Hop Health & Wellness 5K & Festival” at the Educational Cultural Complex in Mountain View. Since 2015, the community event has inspired many District 4 families to commit to fitness, health, and community resource awareness. It was so good to see people of all ages express their love for hip-hop and fitness. Shout-out to the entire San Diego Hip Hop Health & Wellness 5K & Festival team. Events like these are strengthening our communities.

DIGITAL EQUITY DAY PROCLAMATION
|
On Oct. 1st, I proclaimed “Cox Communications Digital Equity Day” in the City of San Diego. NFL star and author Malcolm Mitchell joined us in Chambers for the proclamation. Not only is Malcolm a Super Bowl champion, but he is a champion for digital equity. He later spoke to Lincoln High School students on how digital literacy helped him achieve success in life. Thank you to Cox Communications and Malcolm for their community work in District Four.
The proclamation is also a reminder of the digital equity initiatives spearheaded by Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe, Councilmember Vivian Moreno, and former Councilmember Georgette Gómez. We extend our gratitude to Cox Communications and the entire City Council for joining me on “Cox Communications Digital Equity Day.”

THE TIJUANA SEWAGE CRISIS
|
On Oct. 1st, I joined Councilmember Vivian Moreno and our colleagues to demand the federal government declare a national emergency for Tijuana Sewage Crisis. The City Council voted unanimously to approve a resolution calling for this declaration. This approval is another step to help address the environmental crisis happening at our border. Our communities deserve clean beaches and better air quality.

We are one step closer to a brand new Oak Park Library. On Oct. 9th, I voted “Yes” to approve the Oak Park Library design-build agreement contract award. Thank you to my Active Transportation and Infrastructure Committee colleagues, Councilmembers Stephen Whitburn and Joe LaCava, for voting unanimously on this item.
I am excited for the community, especially the youth in Oak Park. Thank you to Elida Chavez and Claudia Thompson, the Friends of the Oak Park Library, and the supporters of the new Oak Park Library.

District 4 is living in unprecedented times as families struggle with inflation and rising housing costs. On Oct. 16th, during the Budget & Government Efficiency Committee meeting, I shared my top budget priorities for District 4: Economic Development, Quality of Life, and Public Safety. These priorities include community programs like “No Shots Fired,” “SD Access 4 All,” “Come Play Outside,” “Small Business Enhancement Program (SBEP),” and "Cannabis Equity.” I also called for the restoration of the “Community Equity Fund.”
To address homelessness, we need to review how we can further invest in rent subsidies as we see more families entering rather than leaving homelessness. My budget priorities also call for more Affordable Housing and First-Time Homebuyer Assistance Programs.
Lastly, I will continue to prioritize the Black Arts + Culture District as it is vital to the much-needed economic development of District 4. I would like to ask District 4 residents to please continue to engage with my team regarding any needs, as this is the start of a budget process, and we have a long road ahead of us.

Increased Pay for Traffic Control Workers
|
On Oct. 1st, City Council heard Item 56 to amend the municipal code regarding the City’s Traffic Control Worker Prevailing Wage Rate Ordinance. The Ordinance ensures traffic controllers are paid a wage equivalent to the prevailing wage for private work done in the public right of way. We must continue to identify ways to increase wages to support our families and strengthen our communities. This increase in pay will ensure that more of our residents will have a livable wage and will be able to improve their quality of life.

More Park Space in Bay Terraces
|
On Oct. 8th, the San Diego City Council heard Item S506 authorizing six joint use facility agreements. One of those agreements includes Zamorano Elementary School in District 4. The agreements continue the collaborative effort between the City of San Diego and the San Diego Unified School District on shared park space.
The joint use agreement gives students at Zamorano Elementary School extended access to Bay Terraces Park during and after school hours. The terms of the agreement also include resources for the operation and maintenance of approximately 3.05 acres of natural grass playfield and its associated infrastructure. I support this item and will continue working to bring more green space to our parks and access for our residents.
