Dear {{prefix}} {{lastname}},

Here’s what’s been going on this week:

Why Using an In-House Mill and Pave Team Speeds Up Road Repairs

Providing in-house repairs to damaged roads ensures that San Diego is doubling down on our commitment to fixing our infrastructure as fast as possible. Typically, the City uses third-party contractors to conduct road work. However, adding an additional in-house team to do the work allows us to make targeted repairs fast to roads that truly need them.

A portion of Bisby Lake Ave  was recently repaved by the city’s in-house mill and pave team, restoring a failed road to good condition. Grateful for the work of our city staff to implement innovative strategies to repair our roads more quickly and comprehensively than we ever have before.

World Design Capital Pavilion Coming to Balboa Park

This next week, the World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 “Exchange” Pavilion will be launched in Balboa Park. It's truly an incredible piece of design that highlights our binational region in a creative way. The team behind this project, artist Daniel Ruanova and design firm HELEO, are truly binational. This temporary art instillation will live in Balboa Park for the next couple months and "invites us to immerse ourselves in its physical and conceptual presence, contribute to its public memory and coexist with others who arrived along the way."

There will be a few different events next week highlighting the launch of the Pavilion, including an open house next Saturday. I'll be there -- and I hope to see you there as well. Here's the details:

Humane Society Needs Your Help

I caught this blurb in Steve and Betty Rodriguez’ weekly newsletter, The Linda Vista Update, about how the San Diego Humane Society is under a large strain right now with an “unprecedented number” of dogs having entered into the organization’s care. Steve and Betty report that the organization have 844 dogs in their care, including 660 adult dogs and 184 puppies and more than 100 dogs that have been with the Humane Society for 100 days or more.

Pasting some really helpful information from this week’s LV Update:

According to the SDHS, here's how the community can help:

Adopt: Adopting saves lives, and there are thousands of pets in crowded shelters waiting for a second chance. From puppies and kittens to senior companions and small pets like rabbits and guinea pigs — San Diego Humane Society is overflowing with deserving animals in need of adoption. We offer an adoption guarantee, so families can have peace of mind knowing that if the pet isn’t the right match, we’ll welcome the animal back into our care. Visit sdhumane.org/adopt to learn more.

Foster: This is a critical – and temporary – way you can make an immediate impact and help save lives. By opening your home to foster a pet, you give them relief from the stress of the shelter and create desperately needed space for other animals in need. Visit sdhumane.org/foster to sign up to become a foster.

Donate: Make a gift to help care for the 1,971 pets who are in the shelters right now and counting on a second chance. Visit sdhumane.org/donate to contribute.

Spay and neuter: Increasing the number of spayed/neutered animals is the only way to stop the crisis of pet overpopulation at its root. Reduced access to spay/neuter services during the pandemic has exacerbated the challenges facing our shelters. Visit sdhumane.org/spay for low-cost resources.

With record numbers of pets in their shelters, all San Diego Humane Society campuses (including San Diego, El Cajon, Escondido, and Oceanside) are able to take in owner-surrendered dogs by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, please call 619-299-7012.

Survey: What D7 Small Business Deserves to be Highlighted?

I work hard to support our local small businesses here in District 7 and across San Diego. What’s a small business in District 7 (from Morena/Linda Vista in the West to San Carlos and Lake Murray in the East) that I should highlight in my Small Business of the Month series, where I go visit a small business to chat with them about issues affecting them and highlight my visit in my communications?

Reply to this email to suggest a favorite small business of yours or one that deserves more attention, and we might just highlight it with a future Small Business of the Month visit!

This Weekly Newsletter is TRASH.

Just kidding – or well, at least only this blurb is trash in that it's about trash.

I saw an article this week from Voice of San Diego about how “San Diego’s Organics Recycling Seems to Be Working.” According to the article, “people living and working in the city of San Diego are throwing less waste in the landfill and sending more organics to be recycled into compost.” That’s good news! We can all do our part to reduce our organic waste and instead use the new green bins to recycle organic matter.

Speaking of: my team has hosted multiple workshops that teach residents how to use the green bins effectively. We’re about to host another workshop at the Tierrasanta Rec Center on Friday, August 16 from 2:00 to 3:00pm. Sign up here!

Finally, I’d like to plug the workshops that the City is hosting to identify the trash and recycling needs and wants of residents. The District 7 workshop will be at the Serra Mesa-Kearny Mesa Library, located at 9005 Aero Dr, San Diego, CA 92123, from 5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m. on August 27. Please learn more at cleangreensd.org.

If you’re new here, this email series is called ‘The Raul Roundup.’ I'll be sending along a few things I'm seeing online, reading about in the news, and doing as your City Councilmember. These fun and short emails will arrive straight to your inbox every Friday.

Hope you have a great weekend.

All the best,

Raul
