Dear {{prefix}} {{lastname}},

San Diego City Councilmember Raul Campillo here: happy Friday!

Welcome to this week's Raul Roundup, your go-to source for the latest news, updates, and insights from our community and City Hall. Here’s what’s been going on this week:

New V-Calm Signs on Greyling Drive

Serving constituents is what this job is all about. So glad to be able to work with city staff to install V-Calm signs on Greyling Drive in Serra Mesa after Clare H., a resident of Serra Mesa, reached out to our team.

I have to share the incredibly kind note that Clare, the resident who made the request, wrote to us:

Hi Miles,

I wish to extend my thanks to you, Councilmember Campillo, and the folks at Transportation for installing the V-Calm signs on Greyling Drive! I am hopeful they will help remind drivers to slow down and be mindful of the posted speed limit.

Additionally, I am very grateful for your patience, efficiency, and thoroughness in corresponding with me over the last couple of years. It is people like you who renew my faith in public servants during this fraught political time.

With thanks and all good wishes,

Clare [Serra Mesa Resident]

Great work Miles to get this one done — and many thanks Clare for the kind words! As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to our team here with any constituent request and we will do our utmost to help.

Celebrating a D7 Spelling Bee Champion

Big congratulations to Duaa Ouznali from Bright Horizon Academy in Allied Gardens for winning the San Diego County Scripps Regional Spelling Bee! After nearly 30 intense rounds, she clinched the title by correctly spelling droshky—an old Russian carriage. Now, she’s headed to Washington, D.C. to represent San Diego County at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.

Duaa’s achievement is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and academic excellence that we have no shortage of in District 7. Wishing her the best of luck as she takes the national stage!

San Diego’s Cruise Industry is Booming—And That’s Good for Our Economy

I’m excited to see San Diego’s cruise industry growing, because it means big things for our local economy. Royal Caribbean is set to homeport here for the first time ever, bringing a record 44 cruise calls and 211,000 passengers during the 2026-27 season. Norwegian Cruise Line is also increasing its presence, and together, these additions will more than double our cruise business by 2027.

Every new cruise call brings an estimated $2 million in economic impact, supporting local businesses, tourism jobs, and port operations. As our city continues to grow economically, this expansion reaffirms San Diego as a world-class travel destination.

Growing our local economy is a top priority for me, and these investments in our port mean more jobs, more tourism, and more opportunities for San Diegans.
