Small Business Outreach: Sangucheria Peruvian Food
|
This week, I had the pleasure of visiting Sanguchería, a vibrant Peruvian sandwich shop located right in the heart of Tierrasanta. Owned and operated by Coco Reategui and Diana Sanchez, this family-run gem has been serving up authentic Peruvian street food since 2022 — and the local community has welcomed them with open arms.
Sanguchería offers a rotating menu of Peruvian favorites every Friday and Saturday, alongside staples like empanadas and their customer-favorite chicharrón sandwich. If you haven’t tried it yet, you’re missing out! You can order through delivery apps, but I highly recommend stopping by in person to experience the welcoming atmosphere and amazing art on the walls, which was painted by Diana herself!
Supporting small, locally owned businesses is a vital part of building strong neighborhoods, and Sanguchería is a perfect example of how food can bring a community together. Stop by and show them some love!

Padres Predictions for 2025
|
Baseball is back, and as a proud Padres season ticket holder (and husband to another one), I’ve got my glove, my hot dog budget, and my wildly optimistic predictions ready to go.
The Outlook: 2025 could be our year... just like 2024 was supposed to be, and 2023 before that. But seriously, the team looks strong — Tatis Jr. is healthy, Michael King is throwing fire, and I’ve got a good feeling about this squad.
Predictions That Will (Probably) Age Perfectly:
- Tatis Jr. Steals Home: Not because the coach told him to — just because he felt like it.
- Manny Machado Hits 30+ Home Runs: All while making it look incredibly effortless and mildly annoyed.
- Yu Darvish Returns Midseason: Just in time to strike out the entire Dodgers lineup in one inning. Twice.
- Petco Park Introduces a New Menu Item: It’ll be $19, wildly delicious, and Rafa will personally eat a whole one of them. I'll be sure to share a picture when it happens.
- The Padres Finish 90-72: And finally give us the playoff run we’ve been manifesting since 1998.
And the Boldest Prediction of All: Nadia and I won’t lose our voices yelling at the ump by game 3 this year. (No promises.)
Whether you’re at Petco Park or yelling at your TV, let’s back our Friars -- who are now 1-0 after winning against the Braves yesterday. Go Padres!

Standing Up for San Diego’s Economy
|
This week, I held a press conference to sound the alarm about President Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, as well as more tariffs on other global trading partners—set to take effect on April 2nd. As Chair of the City Council’s Economic Development & Intergovernmental Relations Committee, I’ve heard directly from business and community leaders about the devastating impacts these tariffs could have on San Diego.
These tariffs are not just abstract economic policy—they are a direct tax on all of us. If implemented, they would raise the cost of groceries, gas, clothing, building materials, appliances, and even healthcare. For families already struggling with San Diego’s high cost of living, that could mean the difference between making rent or not. For small businesses trying to stay afloat or give workers a raise, this could halt progress and stall growth.
I was proud to stand alongside leaders from the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Building Industry Association, the World Trade Center San Diego, and others to urge President Trump to reverse course. We all agree: tariffs threaten local jobs, raise consumer prices, and slow our economy.
In moments like this, we have to put partisanship aside and do what’s right for San Diego’s working families and businesses. With less than a week to go before these tariffs take effect, I’m calling on the White House to listen to business leaders, economists, and everyday Americans who are all saying the same thing: tariffs hurt us all.
I’ll continue fighting to protect San Diego’s economy and keep our city moving forward.

City Council in Sixty Seconds
|
In case you haven’t been following my social media channels of late, we’ve kept the City Council in Sixty Seconds video series going. This week, I chose to highlight:
- Affordable housing loans across the city
- Water pipeline work in Morena
- A contract related to checking in and out library books
Again, the goal with these videos is to keep you informed about what’s going on in our local government in a bite-sized way.
If you’d like to make sure you get the videos each week, you can follow me at the following links:
