Repaved Street of the Week: Turnford Dr, San Carlos

How this solar initiative helped one San Diego family. See if you qualify. (Union-Tribune)
|
When I helped negotiate the new franchise agreement with SDG&E in 2021, I fought hard to make sure San Diegans would see real, tangible benefits. With that goal in mind, I developed and introduced the San Diego Solar Equity Program — and this week, we’re seeing just how much it’s helping our communities.
Maricela Santacruz and her family in Lomita had $15,000 in flood damage last year. Like many families, they’d never imagined rooftop solar was within reach. But thanks to this program, they just had 18 solar panels installed for free — and they’re now saving over $200 a month on their electric bill.
This is the kind of investment that changes lives: clean energy, lower bills, and climate justice for working families.
If you live in the City of San Diego and meet the income qualifications, you can now apply regardless of ZIP code. There’s still $600,000 left in this year’s pot — don’t wait.

Linda Vista Elementary Students Receive Donated Books
|
Saw an uplifting story in the Times of San Diego about a recent book donation event at Linda Vista Steam Elementary. State Sen. Dr. Akilah Weber Pierson collaborated with local nonprofit United Way of San Diego County to donate over 800 books. Students got to choose two to take home for reading over spring break.
According to the article, more than half of children in San Diego County are not reading at grade level by the time they enter fourth grade. Providing students with books to read at home—especially ones that are interesting and exciting to them-- is a key way to encourage reading improvement.
Thank you State Senator Weber Pierson and United Way for your great work to serve Linda Vista students!
