San Diego City Councilmember Raul Campillo here: happy Friday!

Welcome to this week's Raul Roundup, your go-to source for the latest news, updates, and insights from our community and City Hall. Here’s what’s been going on this week:

Expanded Center for Military Families in Tierrasanta

Tuesday was a big day in Tierrasanta! We officially cut the ribbon on the new Armed Services YMCA Center for Military Families—a project over a decade in the making that will transform life for the families who serve our country.

San Diego is home to nearly 110,000 active duty military members, and over 70% of them have children under 14. This new facility in Murphy Canyon fills a critical gap in childcare, summer programming, and early childhood education. It will:

  • Expand capacity from 35 to 90 kids during the school year
  • Double the toddler program
  • Offer weekend drop-in care
  • Host 120 kids in summer camps starting June 2, 2025

The Padres, USS Midway Foundation, Zable Foundation, Farmers Insurance, and so many generous donors stepped up to make this possible—including building a new whiffle ball field and playground for our military families.

Thank you to Armed Services San Diego for your tireless work and vision. It was an honor to be there on Tuesday to help open the doors on a brighter future for those who give so much.

Coffee with Campillo (And Jacobs!)

Good things happen when we listen and hear from our neighbors.

This past weekend, Congresswoman Sara Jacobs and I teamed up for a packed Coffee with the Congresswoman/Councilmember event. We welcomed over 80 residents for conversations about the federal administration, economic uncertainty, the City budget, and local concerns. Taking questions directly from the community isn’t just important — it’s essential to making government work for everyone.

I’m grateful for Congresswoman Jacobs’ partnership and her strong leadership for District 7 and our region. Her voice in Washington is more important than ever. Thank you to everyone who showed up, spoke up, and helped drive the conversation forward. We look forward to seeing you at the next one!

Budget Review Committee Meetings Happening Next Week

Next week, the City kicks off its annual budget hearings — and I want to make sure that you have the information you need to participate. From Monday, May 5 through Friday, May 9, we’ll be reviewing the Mayor’s proposed budget and making decisions that directly impact public safety, infrastructure, and the services that keep San Diego running.

In my inaugural speech, I said that our City should focus on what we do best: keeping our neighborhoods safe, maintaining our infrastructure, and growing a strong local economy. That’s the lens I’ll be bringing to every budget conversation — and I want to hear from you as we work to make sure our dollars reflect our values.

You can watch the hearings and offer public comment live via Zoom at this link. Non-agenda public comment will be taken on Monday, May 5 during the 6:00 PM hearing.

This is your chance to make your voice heard on the issues that matter most — from street repairs and parks to public health and economic opportunity. I hope you’ll join us.

College Ave Work Finished!

Big news, District 7 — College Avenue has been repaved! This busy corridor was long overdue for attention, and I’m thrilled to share that it’s now smoother, safer, and ready for action.

Whether you're getting onto the 8, commuting to work, or just running errands — this is exactly the kind of infrastructure upgrade that makes everyday life better.

Thank you to the residents who spoke up, stayed patient, and helped make this happen. And to our hardworking City crews — thank you for getting it done. More to come, District 7 — we’re just getting started!

Another Great Linda Vista Multicultural Fair

On Saturday, my staff and I attended and participated in the Linda Vista Multicultural Fair, an annual event that offers great food, incredible cultural entertainment, and activities of all kinds for families to enjoy year after year.

This year was the 40th anniversary. Thanks to the hard work of Linda Vista organizations, the generosity of donors, and the support of many volunteers, this cherished community event has brought joy and celebrated diversity for four decades. It was wonderful to celebrate with Linda Vista, and I look forward to next year!

This email series is called the 'Raul Roundup.’ I'll be sending along a few things I'm seeing online, reading about in the news, and doing as your City Councilmember. These fun, informative, and short emails will arrive straight to your inbox every Friday.

Hope you have a great weekend.

All the best,

Raul
