As our community grapples with the tragic and terrifying plane crash in Murphy Canyon this week, it doesn’t feel right to send out a ‘normal’ Raul Roundup. Right now, my focus — and the City’s focus — is on making sure the public stays informed and that we are doing everything possible to support the families affected by this heartbreaking event.
First and foremost, I want to thank the law enforcement officers and first responders who responded with incredible speed and professionalism. I spent much of Thursday morning on the ground in Murphy Canyon, and I was genuinely moved by the coordination and commitment shown by agencies at every level — including San Diego Police, San Diego Fire-Rescue, the National Transportation Safety Board, FBI, CHP, San Diego Unified School District, and more. We are truly fortunate to live in a city where, in moments of crisis, we can count on the very best.
There’s still a lot we don’t know about what happened — but what we do know is that recovery
takes time. I’ve been heartened to see how many of you have reached out asking how to help. As of late Thursday, we have been informed that donations were so abundant yesterday that no further donations are needed at this time. We are grateful for the U.S. Navy coordinating the support needed to impacted families.
This week has been a painful reminder of how fragile life is. Today, all of us are still processing and grieving the lives that were lost – while simultaneously being incredibly grateful that nobody on the ground perished.
To the families who’ve been displaced: you are not alone. We stand with you.
We’ll continue to share updates and resources in the days ahead. Until then, let’s continue to support one another and hold our neighbors close.
