San Diego City Councilmember Raul Campillo here: happy Friday!
Welcome to this week's Raul Roundup, your go-to source for the latest news, updates, and insights from our community and City Hall. Here’s what’s been going on this week:

Remembering SDPD Officer Austin Machitar
|
Wednesday was a somber and moving day as we honored the San Diego Police Department’s fallen officers and sadly added a new name to the memorial outside SDPD Headquarters: Officer Austin Machitar, who lost his life in the line of duty last year.
|
His passing is a powerful reminder of the risks our officers take every single day to keep our communities safe. We will never forget his service, his sacrifice, or the impact he made.
May his memory continue to inspire our city’s commitment to public safety and to one another.

Families to Move Back into Murphy Canyon Housing
|
A week after the tragic plane crash in Murphy Canyon, we’re beginning to see signs of recovery. This week, 35 of the 39 displaced military families were cleared to return to their homes — a critical step in the healing process for a community that has endured so much in such a short time.
It continues to be an absolute miracle that this crash wasn't worse. I keep thinking about the incredible work of our first responders to show up on the scene, contain the fires, and get families out safely. Our Police and Fire Department's response here demonstrates just how important it is to have well-trained, well-staffed public safety departments who are more than capable of meeting the moment when crisis strikes.
To the families affected: we’re with you. I’ll continue working with City officials and military partners to make sure that the City is supporting the neighborhood in its recovery.
We've seen a powerful outpouring of support from neighbors, nonprofits, and military partners alike -- and many folks continue to ask how they can help. The latest that our office has been informed is that further supplies are not needed at this time. However, nonprofits like Zero8Hundred, STEP (Support The Enlisted Project), Feeding San Diego, and Armed Services YMCA have provided a key role in supporting the affected families -- and any donations to these organizations continue to be helpful. View this webpage from the San Diego Military Advisory Council for more information.

Congratulations to Mission Trails Photo Contest Winners

What an honor it was to join the Mission Trails Photo Contest celebration last week! The talent in our community is incredible — and so is the love people have for this park. From breathtaking landscapes to wildlife and candid moments on the trail, the photos on display did an excellent job of showcasing why Mission Trails is such a special place.
Congratulations to all the winners! You can view the full list of submissions here.

Honoring Rabbi Bogopulsky’s 29 Years of Service
|
While I was there on Saturday, I read a City proclamation officially declaring May 26, 2025 as Rabbi Avram Bogopulsky Day. As I said at the event: if you want to understand his legacy, look at the strength and warmth of the community he’s helped shape. From helping build community institutions to welcoming generations of San Diegans into Jewish life, Rabbi Bogopulsky’s impact is profound and lasting.
Thank you, Rabbi Bogopulsky, for nearly three decades of leadership, compassion, and service. We wish you nothing but peace and joy in this next chapter — and we know your legacy at the Beth Jacob Congregation will live on.

Tierrasanta Library Turns 40 (Ish)
|
On Saturday, I had the honor of presenting a City Council proclamation celebrating the “40-ish” anniversary of the Tierrasanta Library!
|
The library first opened its doors in 1979, but moved into its current building in 1984—and with last year’s 40th anniversary unfortunately interrupted by construction, we finally got the chance to celebrate. Since its founding, the library has grown from 6,000 volumes to nearly 71,000, and it remains a cornerstone of the neighborhood.
Huge thanks to the incredible staff, volunteers, and neighbors who’ve helped make this such a welcoming and vital space for our community. Here's to the next 40!

Off the Dais: A Small Moment That Meant a Lot
|
If you're a Padres fan like me, you probably saw the emotional moment during Tuesday’s game when Marlins second baseman Ronny Simon -- a rookie -- left the field in tears after committing three errors that allowed the Padres to come back from 6-0 down and ultimately win the game 8-6.
What happened next, though, is what really stuck with me: three Padres players — Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Luis Arraez — reached out after the game to encourage him.
Pro sports can be brutal. The pressure is real. But it says something profound about our team — and our city — when we respond with compassion and class.
As someone who not only loves the Padres and the game of baseball, but also believes deeply in lifting people up when they are down, I just wanted to shine a light on this gesture. It’s a reminder that how we treat others — especially when no one’s looking — is what defines us most.
Well done, Padres.
